Quarantine Pests & Phytosanitary Certification
All fruit export shipments must be inspected and certified to be pest-free for the quarantine pests listed for the specific destination country. Depending on your location, either USDA or USDA certified state agents perform these inspections just prior to loading shipments for transport. However, before this can happen each facility wishing to export to a specific country must be registered well in advance with USDA, the state agency and/or with a shipping agent responsible for negotiating the export agreement with the country for which you wish to ship.
Some countries have additional treatment requirements and declarations for either specific arthropod or disease pests. For more information on the phytosanitary requirements of the country for which you would like to export, or how to become a registered exporting facility see the list of contacts to the right.
Quarantine Pests
Listed below are quarantine pests (insects and mites only) with the specific country requiring pest-free phytosanitary certification. The list may not be complete as pests may be added at any time by the export country. Some of the pests listed here do not occur on apples or pear, and may not even be found in the Pacific Northwest. They are included here because they appear on that country's general pest quarantine list which does not discriminate between crops or their origins. An attempt was made here to indicate which pests are not found here. Countries not included in this list either do not allow import of apples or pears, do not list any specific pests, or are included under the European Union. Also, recently added to this list: pathogens such as fungal or bacterial pest organisms that may be included on the phytosanitary certificate are shown in green. Check with your inspectors or exporter for additional information on required treatments, labelling and additional quarantine organisms. Additional country specific shipping information can be found at NHC's Export Manual: Individual Countries.
Footnote Key:
1 From area certified to be free of pest (or may require treatment);
2 not known to be in WA; 3 not known in US
4 even dead specimen will cause shipment rejection;
5 known to already occur in that country.
Pests listed under each country are listed on WA apple phytosanitary export statement unless otherwise stated.
Each country's Q-pest list may not be complete - some species not found in WA or the US may not be listed. Check EXCERPT for the full listings.
Diseases listed in tables use green text.
